Metabolic Rate, Measured
EVA metabolic rate is currently computed from suit consumables — oxygen bottle pressure drop and CO₂ concentration at the scrubber cartridge. That measures the suit and infers the astronaut. Measuring the crew member directly closes a gap identified during Gemini, when EVA energy expenditure exceeded the life support system's cooling capacity.
CO₂ Exposure Tracking
NASA-STD-3001 sets nominal CO₂ limits, but contingency limits are not specified. Physiological response to elevated inspired CO₂ appears within one to five minutes and symptoms reach asymptote after forty. Continuous inspired-CO₂ tracking makes washout adequacy observable during the EVA rather than assessed after it.
Thermal and Cardiovascular State
Core and skin temperature with cardiovascular response across the EVA envelope. Mir EVA records document overcooling during rest in shadow after high workload, and tachycardia with rhythm disorders under stress — findings captured as post-hoc medical observation rather than live telemetry.
Sealed Mission Record
Pre-EVA baseline, in-suit telemetry and post-EVA debrief as one time-locked, gap-flagged record, structured for the qualification frameworks crew systems are certified against.
